Chapter Fifteen

Hope

“You kids have fun tonight,” Landon’s grandfather said as we pulled into his driveway. “But be safe.”

“Don’t worry. Safe is my middle name.”

He grinned. “You need to spend more time with her, Landon.”

“Yes sir.” I looked into the rearview mirror and caught a small smile tugging on the corners of Landon’s lips as he brought the SUV to a stop before the garage door.

Things were definitely changing between us. We’d both admitted it back at my house. But what did it mean? Was I part of the reason he’d stopped drinking? What if he was only chilling out during Project Personality? What if he went into full-on party mode once I turned in my application and had my interview? What if we were out celebrating and we got busted? Would MIT revoke my application if they found out?

My heart started pounding.

Then there was the whole kiss thing. Why had he done it? Did he want to be my boyfriend? Or was he just checking another item off my list?

He’d probably kissed lots of girls. I mean, we’d never talked about it, but how good that kiss was, he must have had a lot of practice.

The constant barrage of thoughts made my head spin, so I let out a slow breath as I smoothed my hand down the front of my Drusilla costume. Hopefully I hadn’t forgotten anything, since I bolted upstairs to my bedroom and quickly threw it on before we jumped in the car to bring Landon’s grandfather home.

Hank unbuckled his seat belt and reached for the door handle when Landon gently placed his hand on his grandpa’s arm. “Are you sure you’ll be okay by yourself?”

My heart melted at the sweet gesture.

“I’m sure.” The corners of his eyes crinkled as he gave his grandson a sad smile. “Thank you for asking, though.”

I opened the back door and stepped out into the frigid air at the same time as Landon’s grandfather got out of the passenger’s side.

“Thank you again for coming to my sister’s party. She loved the game you got her. I have a feeling that I’ll be playing a lot of Zingo Bingo in the future.”

Landon’s grandfather chuckled. “You are so welcome. And I meant what I said in the car. You’re good for Landon. I really hope you two keep spending time together.”

“Thank you. Me too.”

Damn, I felt the words I’d just uttered on a molecular level.

He pulled open the passenger door and closed it carefully behind me once I was in. He was such a sweet man—I hated that he was alone now. He seemed to be doing okay, but while he was at the party, I caught him watching my grandparents with sadness darkening his eyes when they’d held hands or hugged each other.

Landon waited until his grandfather got into the house before backing out of the driveway and heading down the road.

We drove in silence for several minutes before he placed his hand, palm side up, on the center console.

Without a word, I slid my hand into his and smiled.
